Today was great. First of all, I'd like to share that this is my view on the way to work everyday:
Secondly I had a half day today. I am liking it here. My job in the warehouse is looking to be one of the best gigs for so many reasons. My boss, Fred, is a great guy. My coworker Collin, is relatively new. He's been here about a month. Sam, the person I'm here to replace, has about two more weeks. That is the crew at the retail warehouse. After the restock of the retail centers this morning, Fred took us all out to a new Greek place for lunch. I had some amazing food. A gyro-spezial which was actually closer to a barbaque dish than what one might think of a gyro in the States. Delicious though.
After that, I was done with my work day. I still have a few paperwork issues that I am waiting to complete. The wonder of the bureaucracy is that it seems that you're always waiting on something and following a procedure. Right now, I'm playing the waiting game. If you didn't know, the department of defense is a pretty big organization, and they have centralized offices, so whenever we need something processed, it gets thrown in with everything concerning any office under the DOD. I may be waiting for a few more days before I can complete this stuff.
The rest of my day was filled with socializing at The Abrams, my dorm complex. It used to be a Nazi Hospital. The American Army took it over at the end of the second world war. It is a pretty cool complex, but I still have trouble navigating it sometimes, as I don't find too much logic in its design. I'm sure it made more sense as a hospital. I can envision differing sections being split into different wards, but its all just dorms now. There are a handful of offices too. Some of my fellow employees decided to go down to the basement and watch The Hangover in our movie room. It was a good time. Then we all went and made dinner and just hung out all night. I almost went bowling with a group of people, but I opted to save a buck. I was having a really good time just getting to know the people in my hall anyway.
I have the next two days off. Tomorrow, depending on the weather, I think I'm going to hike up the Kramer, one of the mountains here. It is the same mountain with the halfway house I blogged about a few days ago. I'm sure I'll stop there again, and hopefully get a beer and some apple strudel. I plan to make it to the top though.
Sunday, I think I'm going to go on a tour with a fellow Austinite to the Neuschwanstein Castle. Lauren has already been, but it was several years ago and she says she really didn't get to see that much of it. This is the castle that Walt Disney modeled the famous Disney castle after. I'm pretty excited to see it up close and explore the innards. I'm sure there will be pictures and lots to write about. I can only go on the tour if it doesn't fill up though, so I may have to wait for a later date, but from what I hear, there is a good chance I can make it this Sunday.
