I did it. Again.
We got some snow in Garmisch a few days ago. It has since melted off down in the valley. It wasn't too far up the mountain before Richard and I encountered snow. The hike was much as I remembered from my last adventure up. Richard wanted to get to the top of the mountain before the whole valley was covered in snow, and we started getting below freezing temperatures. I happily accompanied him up.
We started from the Abrams around 12:30 or so. He worked this morning and I read while I waited for him to get off. After a lunch, we were off.
The hike seemed almost exactly the same up to the St. Martin Hutte, which is a well marked "road" of a path. There wasn't really all that much snow, and it was only slightly cooler than the last time I climbed the mountain.
At one point the path, on a good day, becomes somewhat difficult to find. With snow, it is more so. We managed though. The snow did slow us down a bit though.
We did make it though... I have proof:
We also encountered a mountain goat and her kid. Only five minutes earlier, Richard was speculating on what kind of animals might live on the mountain. We got an answer.
Can you see them?
The way down the mountain was more treacherous than I remember as well. The packed snow of the well walked path wasn't helpful. We figured out that for much of the beginning of our downward journey, "sledding" on our shoes worked fairly well. It was fun so long as we didn't lose control of our speed. Eventually we mad it far enough down the mountain that only the occasional slip occurred.
We got a later start this time than I did last time, so the sun was down well before we got to bottom of the mountain. Luckily I brought some flash lights. They proved to be very very helpful. We made it back to the Abrams just after 6:00 PM. The journey took just over 5 hours.
After that we took hot showers and readied ourselves for a well deserved dinner. After a short lived and fruitless attempt to recruit others to dinner, we set off into the city for food. We didn't have any plan really as to where we wanted to eat, just that we wanted food and quick. We stumbled upon Bollywood after not too much walking. I had heard good things about it from other people in town, so we checked it out. It was the best Indian food I have ever had. It is also the only Indian food I've ever had, but it was good.
After dinner, we made it back to the Abrams just in time to crash, and crash hard.
